Unclaimed Funds

According to the United States Department of Veteran Affairs, there is $33 million in unclaimed funds. This is taken from the website:

“This money represents death awards, dividend checks and premium refunds that were mailed to policyholders. These payments were returned to VA by the Post Office because they could not be delivered. VA holds this money until we can locate the policyholder. Some of these payments have been held for years.”

How can you find out if you or a loved one is entitled to any of this policy money?

Go to this link for the VA here.

You will be asked to enter the veteran's name, birth date (service number, if available) and date of death. There is also a toll-free number for anyone who does not have Internet access – 800-669-8477.

Unclaimed funds are available from a variety of sources. In New York Situation alone there is $10.5 Billion in unclaimed money. You can search for yours here.

The NYS Comptroller's Office has a database of names for whom money is available. I would offer the following hints: enter the least amount of information as possible. I found money for myself (in the amount of $125) because my name was spelled wrong (Michele with two “L”s instead of one) and apparently the bank returned the funds instead of depositing them into my account from our home closing. My sister-in-law has a refund pending from the electric company. There are numerous reasons for the unclaimed dollars.

You will have to possess out and mail in a form showing that you have authenticated who you were by providing valid identification. I simply went to the Town Hall and showed my driver's license and the Town Clerk notarized it for me. I fill you can also do this at the local library or your beget banking facility. Then, you simply mail in the documents and wait for the refund check. Ours arrived in about 4 weeks – without interest. The governments do not pay interest on the unclaimed funds but it is still worthwhile to check and see if they owe you any money.

Most states have Unclaimed Money Databases. I just checked and California has 5.7 Billion in . You can see them here.

Remember, try entering several versions of your name spelling and leave off the city. The least amount of information is often the best when it comes to successfully locating the money owed to you.

Wonderful luck and ecstatic searching!
